Light and roomy. But still with an immense sense of solidity.
Stiff competition, but I think I’d still have to go for St Endellion in North Cornwall. The granite has a faint but distinct sparkle to it, brought out by the clear glass, and the interior – especially the sanctuary – has been made spacious and uncluttered, with quite light-coloured woodwork. So the overall effect is light and roomy, but still with an immense sense of solidity. The mixture of rock and space always gives me the feeling of sea-light, of something wide, ungraspable; very much a North Cornwall and West Wales and West of Ireland feeling, opening out on to a deep and broad horizon. An appropriate sensation for a church, I think.
