The first Scottish ecclesiastical building to be lit by electricity.
My favourite church is St John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Cumnock, Ayrshire. It is a rare Scottish example of Wiiliam Burges, built in 1882 on commission from John Chrichton-Stuart, the 3rd Marquis of Bute who, at the time, was one of the richest men in the world. St John's was the first Scottish ecclesiastical building to be lit by electricity. The Marquis, who converted to Catholicism, wanted the church to be a special focus for music. Not only was I baptised and received my First Holy Communion and the other Sacraments there, but so did my parents and grandparents who were also married there. I played the organ in the church as a teenager and am now planning a new festival for the town which will feature the church in future concerts.
